The Model 642-1 is a J-frame Centennial design with an internal hammer and double-action-only operation. It is a five-shot .38 Special revolver rated for +P ammunition and built around a 1.875 in barrel with a partial underlug.
Construction pairs a matte silver aluminum alloy frame with a matte stainless steel cylinder and stainless steel barrel. This lightweight Airweight configuration keeps mass down while retaining stainless components where it counts.
Sights are fixed, with a serrated ramp front sight and a fixed rear trough integral to the topstrap. Factory black molded boot grips with S&W medallions provide a compact profile.
Markings include the S&W trade mark seal on the sideplate and "SPFLD, MA S&W U.S.A." on the frame. The yoke cut is marked "642-1," and the serial number markings on the butt and yoke cut match. This example is confirmed to have no internal lock and was made in the USA.
