The Rhino 40DS design aligns the barrel with the bottom (6 o'clock) cylinder chamber, establishing the low bore axis characteristic of the series. This configuration, combined with the DS (DA/SA) setup and internal hammer with external cocking lever, provides a controllable and deliberate manual of arms.
Construction balances durability and weight with an aluminum-alloy frame and receiver matched to a steel barrel and steel cylinder. The six-shot, hexagonal-profile cylinder and the revolver's silver-tone finish present the distinctive Rhino aesthetic in a practical 4-inch format.
Sight alignment is fast and precise thanks to the red fiber-optic front sight and a fully adjustable rear sight with green fiber-optic inserts. A ventilated shroud with elongated lightening slots covers the barrel, and the one-piece brown wood grip is stippled and inlaid with a Chiappa Rhino medallion.
An integrated lower Picatinny accessory rail is machined into the shroud for mounting compatible accessories. The revolver is marked "Made in Italy by Chiappa Firearms" and carries CIP N proof marks and Italian proof marks on the cylinder flats, along with the Chiappa Firearms, Dayton, OH import mark.
