The SCAR 17S uses a semi-automatic, short-stroke gas piston system with a two-position adjustable gas regulator. Its monolithic aluminum upper receiver provides a full-length T-marked MIL-STD-1913 top rail, with additional accessory rail sections at the 3, 6, and 9 o'clock positions. The lower receiver is polymer, keeping weight to a factory-listed 8.9 lb.
The 16.25 in barrel is cold hammer-forged, chrome-lined, and threaded, and it is user-removable. It is secured by captive T25 screws (factory torque 62 in-lb), allowing straightforward barrel service per FN’s design. An FN-marked multi-port three-prong muzzle device is installed.
Ergonomics are highly adaptable: the stock side-folds, telescopes for length of pull, and includes an adjustable cheek rest and rubberized buttpad (factory LOP range 12.0–14.5 in). Controls include an ambidextrous manual safety and ambidextrous magazine release, with the bolt release on the left side. The charging handle is reversible and is currently configured on the left.
Factory folding iron sights are installed, with a folding front sight on the gas block and a folding rear aperture sight featuring elevation and windage drums. Markings include FN HERSTAL BELGIUM, FNH USA FREDERICKSBURG VA, and the FN oval logo. Capacity is 20+1, and this rifle comes with four steel 20-round magazines, a hard case, and the owner’s manual.
