Built on the Type 38 pattern and attributed to Toyokawa Naval Arsenal, this Imperial Japanese Navy training rifle shows the key elements of a blank-only trainer. The barrel shank is cross-drilled, a hallmark of the training configuration, and the receiver carries a painted "27" marking on the left side.
Naval provenance is supported by the anchor acceptance/property mark on the barrel shank. Additional Japanese markings include a circular brand on the left buttstock and a rectangular cartouche with characters on the left buttstock, giving the rifle clear identification points consistent with Navy training use.
The rifle retains its military configuration with a full-length hardwood stock, one barrel band, a plain nose cap retained by a transverse screw and cleaning rod (no bayonet lug), and a steel buttplate without a trapdoor. The floorplate is solid and retained by a single screw with no hinged release. The bolt features a round knob and a knurled rear safety knob. Length of pull measures 12.5 in, and capacity is 5+1.
Iron sights are standard military type: an unhooded front sight with protective ears and a tangent ladder rear sight with a sliding cursor. These sighting components reflect the training role while maintaining the familiar Type 38 layout.
