The SR-556 uses Ruger's short-stroke gas piston with an adjustable regulator. It is chambered in 5.56 NATO and built on the AR-15 platform with forged aluminum receivers. The model and crest markings are present on the lower, and the rifle was made in the USA.
The 16.12-inch barrel is cold hammer-forged from 41V45 steel and chrome-lined for durability. It has a 1:9 twist and a threaded muzzle with an open-ended three-prong flash hider. The barrel is rollmarked '5.56 NATO 1-9'.
A free-float quad-rail handguard provides a continuous top Picatinny rail over a flat-top upper receiver. No sights are installed, allowing the user to configure the rifle to their preference.
This example features a custom multi-tone camouflage refinish across the rifle, paired with a Magpul ACS adjustable stock and Magpul pistol grip. A QD sling swivel and rail cover panels are installed. The lower receiver is marked with the Ruger phoenix crest and 'RUGER NEWPORT, NH, USA', and the receiver is model-marked 'SR-556'. The SR-556 family was later discontinued, adding context for collectors of Ruger piston-driven AR variants.
