The Model 640-3 follows the Centennial pattern with an enclosed internal hammer and double-action-only operation, offering a snag-resistant profile suited to its compact 2-inch barrel format. The five-shot fluted cylinder is chambered for .357 Magnum, delivering magnum capability in a J-frame package.
Built from stainless steel, the frame, barrel, and cylinder wear a satin/brushed stainless finish for a clean, uniform look. The round-butt grip frame is fitted with black synthetic finger-groove grips featuring S&W medallions for a secure hold.
Sighting is straightforward and durable: a pinned serrated ramp front sight retained by a cross-pin, paired with a fixed rear top-strap groove. The ejector rod is shrouded and capped with a knurled tip, protecting the rod while aiding positive extraction.
This revolver includes an internal-lock filler plug installed above the cylinder latch. An additional yoke/crane stamp "088" is present. The revolver was made in the United States.
