The K-38 Masterpiece configuration centers on an 8 3/8 inch ribbed, pinned barrel with a serrated rib and short underlug, chambered in .38 Special. It uses a six-shot fluted cylinder on a square-butt K-frame and operates in double-action/single-action.
Target sighting equipment includes a fixed front sight and an S&W micrometer click adjustable rear sight. This setup reflects the revolver's purpose-built target orientation from the era.
Construction is blued carbon steel throughout, complemented by a case-colored, wide, checkered hammer spur and a case-colored grooved trigger. The pinned barrel is correct for the period.
The stocks are checkered walnut diamond Target stocks with S&W medallions, fitted to the square-butt K-frame for a traditional target revolver profile.
Factory markings are present: the yoke is stamped MOD.-14; the barrel is marked SMITH & WESSON on the left and .38 S.& W. SPECIAL CTG. on the right; the right side of the frame shows the S&W logo along with MADE IN U.S.A. and SPRINGFIELD, MASS. markings.
