The Model 559 represents Smith & Wesson’s second-generation evolution of its double-stack 9mm service pistols. This steel-frame, blued variant pairs a short-recoil, locked-breech DA/SA system with a left-side slide-mounted safety/decocker and a rounded trigger guard for a familiar S&W duty profile.
Sighting is a standout: a serrated ramp front blade teams with S&W’s micrometer-click fully adjustable rear sight with protective wings. Rear vertical slide serrations aid manipulation, while the curved smooth trigger and checkered spur hammer reflect the period’s ergonomics.
The pistol carries a 4-inch barrel and an approximate overall length of 7.44 inches. Capacity is 15+1 with the included double-stack magazines. Black checkered synthetic grip panels with S&W medallions provide a secure, service-ready hold.
Production of the Model 559 was limited to about 10,609 units from roughly 1980 to 1983. It is the steel-frame, adjustable-sight counterpart to the alloy-frame 459 and stainless 659 in S&W’s lineup. Slide and frame markings include "SMITH & WESSON" and "MADE IN U.S.A."
