The Model 550-1 uses a floating-chamber blowback system that enables the rifle to cycle .22 Short, .22 Long, and .22 Long Rifle. It ejects to the right and uses a round operating handle on the right side, with a sheet-metal top cover over the bolt area.
The carbon-steel barrel measures 24 inches and is paired with an under-barrel tubular magazine holding approximately 15+1 rounds. A knurled magazine-rod cap and a loading port located near the muzzle support straightforward loading and maintenance.
Sighting is handled by practical open sights: a plain post on a low ramp up front and an open leaf rear with a step-elevator for adjustment. The overall blued finish complements the rifle’s functional layout.
The one-piece walnut stock has a straight comb and an uncheckered surface, finished with a black checkered hard-rubber buttplate bearing the Remington logo. Length of pull is 14.0 inches, and overall length is about 43.5 inches, making this a full-size rimfire suitable for a variety of uses.
Markings include the Remington oval R.E.P. proof, a barrel/date code "EUU" at the left rear of the barrel, and an "SS" stamp at the barrel shank. This Model 550-1 was manufactured in the United States.
