The Topper 158 uses a break-action, single-shot design with an exposed hammer and a capacity of one round. Its 28-inch barrel is marked "TOPPER MODEL 158 20 GA. 3" MOD." and is fitted with a brass front bead; there is no rear sight. The chamber is cut for 3-inch shells and the choke is a fixed Modified, making it a straightforward setup for general field use.
The receiver is steel with a color case-hardened finish showing mottled colors, while the barrel wears a traditional blued finish. The action-opening lever is located inside the trigger guard, to the rear and right of the trigger, a distinctive control placement on this model.
Furniture includes smooth, walnut-finished hardwood with a straight comb and pistol grip, paired with a smooth hardwood fore-end. A ventilated red rubber recoil pad with a white line spacer and molded H&R logo provides the listed 13.5-inch length of pull. There is no checkering, maintaining a clean, utilitarian look.
Markings include the receiver rollmark "HARRINGTON & RICHARDSON, INC. WORC. MASS. U.S.A." and a circled P proof on the barrel. An additional "40" marking appears on the underside of the stock near the toe.
