Construction centers on a stainless steel barrel and slide treated with a Melonite/Armornite-type black nitride finish, paired with a black polymer frame. The striker-fired action uses Smith & Wesson’s hinged trigger system for consistent operation.
Sight equipment is straightforward and durable: fixed steel 3-dot sights with a white-dot front and two-dot rear. Factory slide markings include "M&P 40 SHIELD" and "SMITH & WESSON, SPRINGFIELD, MA U.S.A."
Safety-focused touches include a pivoting top-mounted loaded chamber indicator marked "LOADED WHEN UP," along with a magazine disconnect.
