The Model 87A uses a direct-blowback, semi-automatic system for .22 LR and includes a manual bolt-lock that allows single-shot or manual cycling when using .22 Short or .22 Long. Semiautomatic operation is designed for .22 LR only.
The receiver is the recognizable "gill" pattern with right-side vents, an open-top ejection port, and multiple patent-number rollmarks. The barrel carries the Springfield-marked J. Stevens Arms Co. Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Model 87A legend, while the receiver bears only the patent-number rollmarks.
Sighting is straightforward and durable: an unhooded blade front pairs with a driftable, elevator-adjustable open rear sight. The charging system uses a charging knob for positive control.
Feeding is via an under-barrel tubular magazine with a brass-lined loading port and a knurled inner tube, offering a 15-round capacity.
