The 11-87 Sportsman uses a gas-operated, pressure-compensating system designed to run 2 3/4- and 3-inch 20-gauge shells. It ejects to the right and uses a right-side bolt handle, with a cross-bolt safety positioned at the trigger guard.
The 26-inch vent-rib barrel carries a single-bead front sight and is threaded for Rem Choke tubes. An Improved Cylinder 20-gauge Rem Choke is included, and the thread pattern is the standard Rem Choke interface.
The shotgun is set up with a durable black synthetic stock and fore-end featuring molded checkering for a steady grip. Length of pull is 14.5 inches. Sling-swivel studs are installed front and rear, and a knurled magazine cap simplifies disassembly of the fore-end.
