The Performance Center configuration brings a ported slide and ported 3.1-inch barrel to the Shield platform, helping this micro 9mm track flat while maintaining a slim, single-stack form factor. The slide carries the Performance Center roundel and rear cocking serrations, and it wears a black nitride finish.
The barrel is stainless steel with a nitride treatment, and the frame is lightweight polymer. This first-generation Shield has no accessory rail on the dustcover and is built as a micro-size carry gun with an 8+1 capacity using the included factory magazines.
Controls are streamlined with no external manual thumb safety. The striker-fired action uses a trigger safety with a pivoting safety shoe. Sights are dovetailed 3-dot white, with a single white dot up front and two white dots at the rear for a clear sight picture.
Factory markings include "SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MA U.S.A." on the right side of the slide, "9MM" on the barrel hood, and the right-side slide caution "CAUTION - CAPABLE OF FIRING WITH MAGAZINE REMOVED" beneath the ejection port. Country of origin is the United States.
