It features a 3.1 in stainless steel barrel and a stainless slide treated with a black Melonite/nitride finish, a slim single-stack profile, and steel 3-dot sights. It comes with four factory S&W magazines and a maglula UpLULA loader, and the bore is clean and shiny.

This is the original, first-generation M&P40 Shield configuration with a manual thumb safety and striker-fired action. It uses S&W's hinged two-piece trigger and a slim, single-stack magazine design introduced in 2012 for a compact .40 S&W carry profile.
The slide and barrel are stainless steel with a black Melonite/nitride treatment, paired with a black polymer frame and a steel internal chassis. The slide has rear-only fish-scale serrations and is marked "CAUTION-CAPABLE OF FIRING WITH MAGAZINE REMOVED."
Dimensions are compact and carry-friendly: a 3.1 in barrel, overall length of 6.1 in, height of approximately 4.6 in, and an unloaded weight of about 20.6 oz. Sights are steel 3-dot units, dovetailed front and rear. The dustcover has no accessory rail. Made in the USA.
Capacity is up to 7+1 in .40 S&W. This example includes three 7-round and one 6-round factory S&W magazines with a mix of finger-rest and flush baseplates, plus a maglula UpLULA loader to speed up range or carry rotation.
