The VP40-B configuration provides a reversible, push-button magazine release that is currently set up for left-side operation, paired with ambidextrous slide stop levers. It is a full-size platform with a standard 13+1 capacity in .40 S&W and ships with both 13-round and 10-round magazines.
The 4.09 in cold hammer-forged barrel uses polygonal rifling and a 1:9.8 in right-hand twist. A loaded-chamber viewport in the barrel hood complements the extractor's loaded-chamber indicator function. A red striker cocking indicator at the rear provides clear visual and tactile status.
The slide carries front and rear serrations, an external extractor, and a Hostile Environment nitrocarburized finish. Dovetailed 3-dot sights offer a 6.38 in sight radius. The polymer frame features interchangeable side panels and a backstrap to tailor the grip, plus an extended 4-slot MIL-STD-1913 accessory rail for lights or other rail-mounted gear.
Mechanically, the pistol uses a striker-fired, short-recoil, Browning-type, linkless locking system with integrated safety features: trigger safety, firing pin block, disconnector, a loaded chamber indicator, and a design that requires the magazine to be removed for disassembly.
Markings include "Heckler & Koch GmbH – Made in Germany" on the frame, the HKI – Columbus, GA importer mark, the DE country code, and German CIP proof marks. The slide, frame, and barrel carry matching serial numbers.
