The rifle follows Ruger's AR-556 pattern with a semi-automatic, gas-operated direct-impingement system and a rotating bolt. The forged 7075-T6 aluminum upper and lower receivers are marked with the Ruger phoenix logo, "RUGER MAYODAN, NC USA," the model "AR-556," and a SAFE/FIRE selector legend, and include a QR code.
The 16-inch barrel is threaded 1/2x28 and paired with a 1:8 RH twist to stabilize a broad range of 5.56 NATO projectiles. An aftermarket cylindrical, multi-ported brake/compensator is installed on the muzzle threads.
A free-float aluminum handguard with M-LOK-style slots and honeycomb lightening cuts reduces weight while providing mounting surfaces; short rail sections are integrated where needed. The flat-top upper receiver includes a continuous Picatinny rail, and the rifle is equipped with polymer flip-up backup sights marked RBS (rear) and FBS (front).
Ergonomics and handling are supported by a 6-position collapsible stock and a Magpul polymer pistol grip. The length of pull measures 14.25 inches. Additional upper features include a forward assist, case deflector, and ejection port cover. The rifle accepts STANAG-pattern magazines and has a listed capacity of 30+1. A manual safety selector is present.
