The rifle features extensive non-standard scroll engraving across the barrel and receiver, complemented by a gold-tone oblong inlay on the receiver top. The left side of the buttstock shows a relief-carved hunting scene, adding distinctive hand-done artistry to the factory walnut stock with cut checkering.
Built in the Pre-64 configuration, the Model 88 uses a short-throw lever operating a three-lug rotating bolt. Its detachable box magazine enables the use of spitzer-profile bullets in this lever-action platform. Chambered in .358 Winchester, this configuration saw a short production run and was dropped after 1962; this example dates to 1961.
The 22 in steel barrel is marked "Winchester Proof Steel" and carries Winchester WP proof marks, which are also present on the receiver. Sighting is via a hooded ramp front sight and a barrel-mounted rear sight, matching the rifle’s classic field setup.
