The Model 5946 is a double-action-only, short-recoil, locked-breech design in the 3rd Generation S&W lineup, built on a full-size stainless steel frame with a matching matte stainless slide. It uses a 4-inch barrel and a non-railed dust cover, consistent with its 1990s duty-pistol configuration.
The DAO configuration is paired with a bobbed, spurless hammer and a slide that has plugged safety/decocker ports, leaving rear cocking serrations only. Controls include a left-side magazine release and a magazine disconnect safety. Markings include a frame stamp "Mod. 5946," a barrel hood marked "9MM PARABELLUM," the S&W crest on the frame, and the slide legend "CAUTION: REFER TO INSTRUCTION MANUAL."
Sighting is via fixed Novak Lo-Mount steel sights with a dovetailed white-dot front and a dovetailed rear with two white dots. The one-piece wraparound textured black polymer grip panels feature S&W medallions.
Chambered in 9mm Luger, the 5946 uses standard double-stack magazines for a 15+1 capacity. This pistol comes with three factory S&W steel magazines, each bearing S&W logo stamps.
As a 3rd Generation S&W, the 5946 saw wide law-enforcement issuance across North America in the 1990s, including prior NYPD use of the model. This example reflects that proven duty lineage in a durable stainless configuration.
