The AR-556 MPR platform centers on a free-float aluminum M-LOK handguard with a full-length top rail over a low-profile gas block, paired to a flat-top upper receiver. The upper includes a forward assist, brass deflector, and an ejection-port dust cover, providing the familiar AR feature set in a streamlined configuration.
The 16.10-inch steel barrel is threaded and fitted with Ruger's radial-port muzzle brake. This setup manages muzzle movement while keeping the system compact. The rifle uses a direct-impingement action and accepts STANAG-pattern detachable box magazines.
Ruger's matte black, hard-anodized aluminum receivers match the rifle's overall matte black finish. A carbine receiver extension with castle nut and end plate supports the collapsible, 6-position polymer stock, and the rifle is equipped with a Magpul textured pistol grip and a manual safety.
Useful upgrades are already installed: a LIMBSAVER recoil pad on the collapsible stock, two short M-LOK Picatinny rail sections on the handguard, and an M-LOK-mounted UTG bipod attached to the handguard's side slots. The bipod mounts directly via M-LOK with clamp discs; no Picatinny adapter is used.
