The SOCOM 16 configuration trims the M1A to an overall length of approximately 37.25 in while keeping the .308 Win chambering and M14-pattern controls. The 16.25 in barrel is fitted with Springfield Armory's proprietary SOCOM multi-port muzzle brake at the muzzle; the front sight is mounted on the separate gas-lock/front-sight assembly immediately behind the brake to help manage recoil and maintain a compact profile. Unloaded weight is approximately 8.8 lb.
Factory sights include an adjustable aperture rear with windage and elevation knobs and a protected front sight post. A forward barrel-mounted Picatinny scout rail is installed for mounting accessories. This rifle also comes with a receiver side-mount Picatinny rail, expanding mounting options.
The black composite stock features molded checkering for grip, a steel buttplate with a flip-up shoulder plate, and sling swivels. The right side of the stock/handguard is marked "SOCOM 16," denoting this specific configuration. Length of pull is 13.0 in.
Built on the M14 platform, the action is semi-automatic, gas-operated, and uses a short-stroke piston system. The .308 Win barrel has a 1:11 RH twist. The rifle uses detachable M14/M1A-pattern box magazines and is listed with a 20+1 capacity. The steel receiver and most components wear a black Parkerized/phosphate finish, while the bolt is left in-the-white (unparked). All are made in the United States.
