The Model 49 Bodyguard is a classic steel J-frame with the distinctive humpback profile. Its semi-shrouded hammer keeps the revolver snag-resistant while still allowing single-action use through the exposed, checkered spur.
Construction is all carbon steel with a bright nickel finish across the frame, barrel, and cylinder. The barrel is pinned, a hallmark of pre-1982 production, aligning with the documented 1981 manufacture date. An 'N' stamped on the cylinder face further confirms the nickel finish, and factory rollmarks include 'MADE IN U.S.A. MARCAS REGISTRADAS SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD, MASS.'
The 1.875-inch barrel pairs with a 5-shot fluted cylinder and a knurled ejector-rod tip without an underlug. Fixed sights include a serrated ramp front and a square-notch groove in the top strap. The action is double-action/single-action.
This example is fitted with Pachmayr Presentation rubber grips with S&W medallions for a secure hold. It also includes the original Smith & Wesson two-piece blue box with an end label denoting the model, with the label matching the revolver’s serial information.
