The SOCOM 16 configuration shortens the M1A to a 16.25-inch carbon steel barrel with a factory multi-port muzzle brake. Overall length is approximately 37.25 inches, with a factory weight of about 8.8 lb, offering a compact M14-platform rifle chambered in 7.62mm NATO (7.62x51).
The receiver is machined from AISI 8620 alloy steel and finished, along with the barrel and metalwork, in a black phosphate coating. The composite stock has a gray/black camouflage finish with molded checkering for traction and GI-type sling swivels. Length of pull is 13.0 inches, and the rifle uses a GI-style hinged trigger guard.
Its operating system is the classic gas-operated, short-stroke piston with a rotating bolt. A two-stage trigger provides a familiar M1A fire-control feel. The included 10-round detachable box magazine supports a 10+1 capacity.
Iron sights consist of a wing-protected front post and an aperture/ghost-ring rear sight with windage and elevation knobs. A forward scout-position Picatinny rail sits ahead of the receiver for mounting accessories. Markings include "SOCOM 16" on the right side and "US RIFLE M1A SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" on the receiver heel.
