Part of Smith & Wesson’s first polymer, striker-fired family, the SW40V sits within the Sigma series and is marked accordingly on the slide. The V designation reflects the established 4-inch duty format that came before the later VE updates, placing this pistol firmly in the early Sigma lineage tied to a pivotal period in service-pistol development.
It features a two-tone look with a matte silver steel slide over a black polymer frame. The frame carries S&W roundels and molded checkering on the frontstrap, backstrap, and sides. The barrel measures 4 inches, with an overall length of approximately 7.25 inches and an unloaded weight of about 24 oz.
The striker-fired action uses a pivoting trigger with an integral safety lever. There is no external manual thumb safety, and per the slide warning it is capable of firing with the magazine removed. Controls include a left-side slide stop and left-side magazine release. The slide is configured with rear-only vertical cocking serrations and an external extractor. The dust cover has no accessory rail.
Sighting is straightforward with fixed 3-dot irons: a front blade with a single white dot and a low-profile, dovetailed square-notch rear. Capacity is 10+1 in .40 S&W, and this pistol comes with two factory 10-round steel magazines.
