Sturm Ruger Mini-14 181-Series .223 Rem Pre-Ranch, 18.5 in Barrel, Threaded Muzzle, Blued, Full Wood Furniture (1978)
This 1978 Ruger Mini-14 is a pre-Ranch 181-series rifle with the Southport, Conn. rollmark and full wood furniture. It features the classic Mini-14 layout with a hardwood stock, early wood upper handguard, and a blued steel receiver. The rifle is equipped with iron sights and has an externally threaded muzzle with no device installed. Note: threaded muzzles were not standard on 1978 181-series civilian Mini-14 rifles; the external threads present are likely a later modification or a non-original GB-style component.

What’s Included
- Sturm Ruger Mini-14 181-Series rifle
- 1x 5-round steel detachable magazine
- Aperture Sight Kit
The 181-series Mini-14 uses a semi-automatic, short-stroke gas system with a fixed piston, a Garand-style rotating bolt, and a right-side operating rod with bolt hold-open. The right-side charging handle and Garand-style trigger-guard safety provide the familiar, robust manual of arms associated with early Mini-14 rifles.
The 18.5 in barrel currently ends in an externally threaded muzzle with no device installed; this is not factory-original for a standard 1978 181-series civilian rifle and is likely the result of a later modification or non-original component. The gas block is secured by screws, and the barrel band includes a front sling swivel. Length of pull is 12.75 in, and this example is configured for 5+1 capacity with the included 5-round magazine.
Full wood furniture sets this rifle apart, combining a hardwood stock with the early-pattern wood upper handguard. The receiver is steel with a blued finish, matching the classic appearance of late-1970s production.
Sights are iron and adjustable: a protected front post pairs with an adjustable aperture rear sight. These rugged sights complement the rifle’s practical, service-style layout.
