The 442-1 is built on an aluminum-alloy J-frame with a matte black finish, paired with a steel cylinder and steel barrel. The round-butt frame wears black checkered rubber boot-style grips that keep the profile compact while providing a secure hold.
Its Centennial-style enclosed hammer supports double-action-only operation for a streamlined, snag-resistant profile. Sights are fixed and integral: a serrated front ramp and a rear notch cut into the topstrap for a simple, durable sight picture.
The 1.875 inch barrel is marked ".38 S.&W. SPL." and the 5-shot fluted cylinder includes a knurled ejector-rod tip. A short underlug complements the compact barrel length. Capacity is 5 rounds of .38 Special.
Markings include "Model 442-1" on the yoke, the Airweight rollmark, and the S&W logo with Springfield, MA address on the right side of the frame. Notably, there is an internal-lock keyhole visible above the cylinder latch. Made in the United States.
