The Model 645 stands out as the first production Smith & Wesson self-loading pistol chambered in .45 ACP, produced from 1985 to 1988 as part of the Second Generation autos. It is the direct predecessor to the Third Generation 4506 family and is well known for its on-screen use as Detective Sonny Crockett’s sidearm in Miami Vice (seasons 3–4).
Built on a full-size stainless steel frame and slide, this pistol features a 5-inch barrel, an approximate unloaded weight of 2.3 lb, a squared trigger guard, and frontstrap/backstrap checkering for a secure hold. The slide incorporates rear vertical serrations and a matte top rib to reduce glare.
Its operating system is double-action/single-action with an ambidextrous slide-mounted safety/decocker, a left-side magazine release, a smooth curved trigger, and a spurred hammer. The single-column design offers an 8+1 capacity, and the 645 uses a press-fit slide bushing rather than a separate 1911-style bushing.
Sights are fixed three-dot, with a white-dot front ramp and a rear notch with two white dots for a consistent, straightforward sight picture suitable for duty-style shooting.
