Built by Zastava in Yugoslavia, this M48A is a post-WWII, intermediate-length Mauser 98 pattern rifle with controlled-round-feed and a third safety lug. The receiver ring carries the Yugoslav state crest over "M48A," and the left receiver rail is marked "ФНРЈ ПРЕДУЗЕЋЕ 44." It bears Yugoslav inspection stamps on the bands and an import mark from Cherry's Inc., Greensboro, North Carolina.
Matching numbers were observed on the receiver, bolt, magazine floorplate/trigger guard assembly, and buttstock. The bolt and shroud are left in the white, and the bolt is turned down with a round knob. The stamped trigger guard and floorplate are consistent with the M48A pattern, and the rifle uses the Mauser 3-position wing (flag) safety.
The rifle wears a blued finish over a full-length hardwood stock with an upper handguard. Stock features include a left-side sling slot, a single crossbolt, and a flat steel buttplate. Length of pull is 13.0 inches.
Sighting equipment includes a hooded front post and a tangent rear sight ladder graduated to 2000 meters. A bayonet lug is present. The 23.25-inch barrel feeds from a fixed 5-round internal magazine loaded by stripper clips.
