This revolver represents the first generation of the Model 586 L-frame, combining the strength of carbon steel with a balanced 4-inch configuration. It is built without an internal lock and uses a square-butt grip frame and a six-shot fluted cylinder with a shrouded ejector rod.
The 4-inch carbon steel barrel carries a full-length underlug and a serrated rib. Sight alignment is quick and precise with a ramped front sight featuring a red insert and a micrometer-adjustable rear sight. The cylinder latch and hammer spur have textured surfaces for positive control.
Factory checkered hardwood target stocks with S&W medallions are fitted, providing a classic look and solid purchase. A Pachmayr rubber finger-groove grip for the L-frame is included in the sale for those who prefer an alternate grip style.
Manufacturer rollmarks include "MADE IN U.S.A. SPRINGFIELD, MASS." with the S&W monogram. Factory assembly numbers C15 and 51883 are present on the yoke, consistent with original assembly practices of the era.
