The Type 54-1 follows the Tokarev pattern with a single-action-only, short-recoil Browning-type tilting barrel system. It is chambered in 7.62x25mm and uses a single-stack 7+1 magazine. The external spur hammer and frame-mounted manual safety provide familiar controls on this commercial export variant.
Construction is service-grade, all-steel with a blued finish on both slide and frame. The pistol is full-size and includes vertical rear slide serrations for grasping. Ribbed black synthetic grips round out the handling features; a Tokarev-style transverse lanyard loop is present at the heel of the grip frame.
Sights are straightforward and durable: a fixed blade front paired with a drift-adjustable rear notch. The removable, self-contained fire-control unit aids serviceability consistent with the Tokarev pattern.
Markings include the KSI Pomona, CA import mark, "MADE IN CHINA BY NORINCO," and the Chinese-model marking "五四式" on the top of the slide. Country of origin is China, with a listed year of manufacture of 1957.
