The H&R 22 Special is a double-action/single-action top-break design with an automatic star extractor for simultaneous ejection. This example features a 7-shot fluted cylinder and a frame-mounted firing pin visible through the recoil shield, consistent with H&R’s large-frame lineage adapted from the Auto Ejecting frame.
The 6-inch round barrel carries a full-length top rib with a longitudinal sighting groove. Sight regulation is via a fixed brass front blade and a fixed rear notch integral to the top latch, a hallmark configuration for the model and era.
Factory rollmarks are present: the left side of the barrel reads H.&R. "22 SPECIAL," the right side reads "22 RIM FIRE," and the top rib is marked "Harrington & Richardson Arms Co., Worcester, Mass. U.S.A." The rear face of the cylinder shows the last three digits "413," indicating its factory-stamped assembly marking.
Construction is all steel with a blued finish on the frame, receiver, and barrel. The external hammer has a knurled spur for positive control, and the early two-piece checkered walnut saw-handle grips reflect the period configuration produced in the late 1920s in the United States.
