The Extar EXP556 is a compact, bufferless AR-type pistol designed around a direct-impingement system with its recoil assembly positioned above the barrel. It features lightweight polymer upper and lower receivers, an 8.25-inch threaded barrel with a ported muzzle brake, and a Picatinny top rail on the upper receiver. At approximately 18 inches overall and about 48 oz unloaded, it offers a streamlined, U.S.-made package that accepts standard AR-15/STANAG magazines.

This EXP556 uses a bufferless operating layout, placing the recoil spring/guide above the barrel. That architecture eliminates the need for a buffer tube while keeping the package compact and well balanced. The pistol still uses a direct-impingement gas system familiar to AR users and accepts standard AR-15/STANAG magazines.
The 8.25-inch barrel is threaded and fitted with a ported muzzle brake. The barrel is free-floated inside a cylindrical, ribbed polymer handguard that keeps weight down while maintaining clearance around the barrel channel.
Controls and layout are straightforward, with a right-side, reciprocating side-charging handle, a standard magazine release, and a manual safety selector. The receivers are polymer, injection-molded upper and lower units with an integral enlarged trigger guard for easy access.
A 12 o'clock Picatinny top rail on the upper receiver provides mounting as needed. Markings read: EXTAR – LAKE HAVASU, AZ, U.S.A. – EXP556 – CAL 5.56 NATO. Overall length is approximately 18 inches, and unloaded weight is about 48 oz. The pistol ships with an MFT EPG16 pistol grip installed.
