The Model 740 Woodsmaster is Remington’s mid-century semi-automatic .30-06, produced circa 1955–1960 before the later 742/7400 series. This example aligns with that period and includes the right-side ejection port with reciprocating bolt handle, a hallmark of the design. It was manufactured in the United States by Remington Arms Co., Ilion, N.Y.
Sighting options are versatile with factory open sights—a ramped front and step-elevator adjustable rear—plus the receiver top is factory drilled and tapped. A scope base is installed and topped with a Tasco 4x32 fixed-power scope using Weaver 1-inch rings, providing a ready optical setup with a duplex reticle.
The rifle retains the traditional Woodsmaster look with a straight-comb wood stock and matching wood fore-end. Sling swivel studs are present, and the butt is capped with a Remington-branded ribbed hard-rubber buttplate. Metal surfaces include a blued finish on the barrel and other steel parts, while the receiver is an anodized aluminum alloy showing typical finish wear. The length of pull measures 14.0 inches.
Barrel length is 22 inches, and the rifle carries the oval REP Remington proof on the barrel along with an MM barrel stamp. Production of the Model 740 totaled approximately 251,398 rifles, and this example falls within the known serial-number block for the model.
