Built on the SKS platform, this Type 56 uses a short-stroke gas piston and tilting-bolt action with a steel receiver. It retains hallmark Type 56 features including a folding under-barrel blade bayonet, wood stock, and a wooden ventilated handguard with two slots. The charging handle is knurled for positive grip.
The iron sight system includes a tangent ladder rear sight graduated 1–10 and a hooded front post. The front sight has been replaced with a polymer option while maintaining the standard sight picture.
A fixed 10-round internal magazine with a hinged floorplate supports stripper-clip loading. The rifle has a 20.5-inch barrel and a 12.5-inch length of pull, offering the classic SKS handling characteristics. The under-barrel cleaning rod and stock cleaning kit are present.
