Product Description

Winchester Model 1897 Takedown Field Grade 12 Gauge, 30-inch Modified, 1917 E-Series, External Hammer, Slam-Fire Capable

This World War I era Winchester Model 1897 Takedown Field Grade was manufactured in 1917 and features the desirable E-series receiver. It is a 12 gauge pump-action with an external hammer, a 30-inch barrel with a fixed Modified choke, and a 5+1 capacity. The takedown configuration shows matching serial numbers on the receiver and takedown yoke ring, and the action is slam-fire capable due to the absence of a disconnector.

    Condition

Overall Condition: Fair condition, showing extensive signs of prior use and handling.

Bore Overall Condition: Fair - Generally clean, some residue or smudges, slight corrosion.

Specific Condition Notes: There is widespread rust and pitting along with finish loss and wear, with a visible patina on remaining finish. The buttpad is a non-original replacement and has a crack in one section. The bore shows blemishes but no bulges.

    What's Included

    • Winchester Model 1897 Takedown Field Grade 12 Gauge pump-action shotgun

The takedown design with matching numbers on the receiver and takedown yoke ring underscores its originality within this configuration and makes transport and maintenance straightforward. The E-series receiver aligns with its 1917 production, placing it squarely in the World War I era of manufacture.

The 30-inch barrel carries a fixed Modified choke for versatile pattern performance. This 12 gauge holds 5+1 rounds and uses the robust slide-bar system with rollmarked barrel and slide components. The external hammer is a defining trait of the Model 1897.

This shotgun is slam-fire capable, reflecting its original no-disconnector trigger system. The action can cycle and fire successive rounds by holding the trigger and working the slide, as is characteristic of this model.

Stock furniture includes a pistol-grip (curved wrist), uncheckered wood buttstock and a ribbed wood slide handle. An aftermarket Wesco-Gel ventilated recoil pad with a black spacer is installed, setting the length of pull at 13.0 inches.

Made in the United States by Winchester Repeating Arms, this Field Grade takedown variant combines period-correct features, clear rollmarks, and a classic profile that represents the Model 1897 design of its time.
