Colt produced this United States Cavalry Bicentennial Commemorative in 1977 as part of its 2nd Generation Blackpowder Series, recreating the Model 1860 Army in a matched, cased two-revolver format. This set is one of about 3,000 made and carries mirrored serial numbers "US2945" and "2945US," with the detachable shoulder stock also numbered "US2945."
Each revolver is a .44 caliber, single-action percussion with 8-inch barrels and a six-shot capacity. They feature blued and color case-hardened finishes, rebated cylinders roll-engraved with the naval engagement scene, and martial 4-screw frames with stock cuts and extended stock screws. The loading levers are the creeping type. Sights are fixed, with a small blade front and hammer notch rear.
Markings include "ADDRESS SAML COLT HARTFORD CT." on the barrels and "UNITED STATES CAVALRY COMMEMORATIVE" identifying the edition. The walnut grips show inspector-style cartouche impressions, and the presentation case lid bears a medallion that reads "UNITED STATES CAVALRY COMMEMORATIVE 1777 1977."
The detachable walnut shoulder stock has brass furniture, a sling ring, and a rotating lock wheel, pairing correctly to the martial 4-screw frames. The set is accompanied by period-style accessories: a "Colt's Patent" powder flask, iron bullet mold, combination nipple wrench/screwdriver, Eley Bros. cap tin, case key, and lead round balls.
