The SIG556R is built around a long-stroke gas piston with a two-position adjustable gas regulator at the gas block, designed for robust cycling with the 7.62x39 cartridge. Its 16-inch barrel is threaded and fitted with a flash hider, and uses a 1:9.5 twist rate suited to common 7.62x39 projectiles.
Feeding is via an AK-pattern rock-and-lock magazine interface with a paddle-style magazine release, and this rifle comes with a 30-round steel AK-pattern magazine. Capacity is 30+1.
Topside, a full-length MIL-STD-1913 rail runs the length of the receiver, while the ribbed polymer handguard includes integral rail sections and a B&T-marked accessory rail segment. Sighting equipment includes a folding rear sight at the gas block, no front sight is installed.
