This 1981 Winchester Model 94 John Wayne Commemorative is a limited-edition lever-action chambered in .32-40 Winchester, a caliber uncommon on late 20th-century Model 94s. What’s Included
- Original Winchester John Wayne Commemorative factory picture box
Winchester released this John Wayne Commemorative in 1981 with documented production of 49,000 Standard U.S. rifles. The series uses a JW serial prefix and carries factory roll engraving with western scenes and film-title border motifs on the receiver sides; the barrel bands are plain matte silver-toned pieces, and this carbine does not use a separate forend cap.
The rifle is chambered in .32-40 Winchester, a noteworthy choice for a late Model 94. It uses a round 18.5" barrel and a full-length tubular magazine for a 5+1 capacity. Sights are traditional iron: a blade front paired with a semi-buckhorn rear sight with elevator.
Its aesthetic configuration is distinctly commemorative: a two-tone presentation with a blued barrel and a matte silver-toned plated receiver. The walnut straight-grip stock and matching forend feature cut checkering and an inlaid commemorative medallion.
Classic operating features remain, including a top-eject receiver without a cross-bolt safety and a large-loop lever for the John Wayne theme. A saddle ring fitted with a leather thong completes the period-inspired details. Length of pull measures 13.0".
Markings include: on the left side of the barrel beneath/near the rear sight, "WINCHESTER – MODEL 94 32-40 WIN. MADE IN NEW HAVEN, CONN. U.S.A. WINCHESTER PROOF STEEL."; and on the top of the barrel ahead of the receiver, "JOHN WAYNE COMMEMORATIVE." The receiver carries engraved commemorative panels and no such text.
