The VP70Z is the civilian variant identified by the grip marking "HK VP70 Z." The left side of the slide is marked "HECKLER & KOCH GMBH OBERNDORF/N MADE IN GERMANY 9mmx19," with a matching serial visible on the barrel hood and German proof marks present. The right side bears the "HK INC ARL VA 22201" import mark.
Its operating system is a simple-blowback design with a fixed barrel and a striker-fired, double-action-only mechanism. A manual cross-bolt safety shows a red ring when in the fire position. The pistol uses a heel-type magazine catch at the rear of the grip base, and a takedown/retaining catch is located under the left side of the slide.

The slide has rear serrations and a checkered rib on top for consistent reference. The frame is polymer with a steel slide, underscoring the model’s place as the first production polymer-frame handgun.
