The Model 396 Night Guard is built on the S&W L-frame with a scandium-aluminum alloy frame in a matte black finish. It uses a five-shot fluted stainless steel cylinder finished in black and a 2.5 in stainless steel two-piece barrel with a fully shrouded ejector rod. Factory sights include an XS 24/7 tritium front sight (pinned) and a Cylinder & Slide Extreme Duty fixed U-notch rear. The low-profile rear sight block is secured by two screws in the top strap, providing a rugged, snag-resistant profile.
The revolver operates in double-action/single-action with a smooth-faced trigger and an exposed, checkered hammer spur. It wears black rubber finger-groove grips for a secure hold, and displays the S&W crest on the left sideplate. The model marking 396 NG appears inside the yoke cut.
