Overall Condition: Fair condition, showing extensive signs of prior use and handling.
Bore Condition: Fair - Generally clean, some residue or smudges, slight corrosion.
Specific Condition Notes: Light pitting is present in the bore and small pitting spots are visible on the exterior of the barrel. There are light scratches on the stock near the recoil pad. Numbers are scratched into the left side of the stock; these are not serial numbers.

Manufactured by High Standard for the Sears J.C. Higgins brand, this Model 583.17 comes from the post-WWII era (circa 1946–1958). It is built on a steel receiver with a blued finish and "PROOF TESTED" markings.
The 27-inch steel barrel is paired with a fixed modified choke and a 2 3/4 inch chamber. A brass front bead provides a simple, durable sighting reference, and there is no rear sight.
An under-barrel tubular magazine provides a stated 4-round capacity. The bolt-action system is complemented by a two-position safety located at the rear/left of the receiver behind the bolt handle.
The hardwood stock features a pistol-grip profile and a slim, straight-sided fore-end with a rounded tip. It is uncheckered and fitted with a ventilated recoil pad. Length of pull measures 13.5 inches.
