The JHP uses a semi-automatic, straight blowback system paired with a fixed 4.5 in steel barrel. This configuration delivers simple operation with a single-stack detachable box magazine and last-round hold-open. The pistol has rear cocking serrations and a polymer trigger with lightening holes.
Controls are straightforward: a manual thumb safety, a magazine disconnect safety, and a thumb safety that can also lock the slide to the rear. A chamber observation port provides a quick visual check. Field-stripping is performed by removing a retainer pin with a punch.
Sights consist of a blade front and a square-notch rear flanked by protective ears. Black polymer grips carry the Hi-Point medallion. The slide is Zamak-3 zinc-alloy with a powder-coat matte black finish over a high-impact polymer frame.
This pre-Gen2 configuration has no optic cut, no threaded barrel, and no 1913 rail. It measures 7.75 in in overall length and weighs approximately 35 oz unloaded. The slide is marked "HI-POINT FIREARMS" and "MANSFIELD, OH," reflecting its USA manufacture.
