The FPC’s folding design is the standout feature. The barrel and handguard assembly folds to the left and locks, taking the carbine from approximately 30 3/8 in overall length when open to just 16 3/8 in when folded. Ejection is to the right side, and factory literature notes an integrated recoil buffer system.
The 16.25 in barrel is made from 4140 steel and finished in black oxide. It is threaded 1/2x28 and uses a 1:10 RH twist. The carbine operates via a semi-automatic, straight-blowback action and uses a flat-faced trigger with a trigger safety blade.
An aluminum handguard with M-LOK slots and a continuous top Picatinny rail provides mounting space. Folding iron sights are installed, and a detachable, rail-mounted vertical foregrip is included. The frame and stock are polymer, with a fixed stock and a length of pull of 14.25 in.
Practical carry and reload features are built in. The stock integrates dual spare-magazine carriers with quick-release tabs, and the carbine ships with two 21-round magazines and one 17-round magazine for a 21+1 capacity. The receiver is marked "SMITH & WESSON MARYVILLE, TN USA" with the model rollmark "M&P FPC."
