The P238 uses a locked-breech design and is configured in single-action-only with an exposed hammer. The left side of the slide is marked "SIG SAUER P238," the barrel is marked "380 AUTO," and the frame reads "SIG SAUER INC. EXETER–NH–USA."
Fixed night sights are dovetailed front and rear. Rear cocking serrations on the slide provide a positive grasping surface.
The lightweight aluminum alloy frame is paired with wood-laminate checkered grips featuring an integral oval SIG SAUER logo. Safety features include an ambidextrous manual thumb safety and a firing pin safety. The dustcover has no accessory rail, preserving a compact profile.
