The Model 27-3 FBI 50th Anniversary Commemorative (1934–1984) pairs Smith & Wesson’s flagship .357 Magnum N-frame with factory-applied gold-filled markings and the FBI/DOJ seal. The commemorative run is recognized for its special FBI-prefix serial-number sequence and presentation-grade finish, with production in 1983 totaling approximately 3,200 units.
This example features a 5-inch barrel with a partial underlug and ejector shroud, a checkered top rib, and finely checkered topstrap to reduce glare. The six-shot fluted cylinder uses a knurled ejector-rod tip, and the square-butt N-frame has serrated backstrap and forestrap for consistent control. Smooth hardwood target stocks with S&W medallions, plus color-casehardened hammer and trigger, complete the classic presentation.
Sights are iron with a ramped front and a micrometer-adjustable rear, offering precise regulation with .357 Magnum loads. The high-polish blued carbon-steel construction underscores the commemorative’s premium fit and finish while remaining true to the Model 27’s heritage.
As a -3 engineering change, this model reflects S&W’s update that eliminated the pinned barrel and recessed chambers. Internal assembly markings are present on the yoke/frame, and the butt and yoke carry matching FBI-prefix serial markings. An additional gold-filled FBI number is present on the sideplate as part of the commemorative treatment.
