The 84S-1 is the factory underfolding-stock variant of Norinco’s Type 84 series, configured for 5.56×45mm. It uses a stamped steel receiver with a ribbed top cover, a vented gas tube with separate metal ventilated upper handguard, and wood furniture consisting of the lower handguard and pistol grip. The underfolding steel stock uses a crutch-style buttplate and provides a compact footprint when folded.
The 16.3-inch barrel is threaded and fitted with a short cylindrical Chinese 2-slot/oval-port flash suppressor (two opposing elongated oval vents) retained by the front sight base detent. A bayonet lug is present. Sighting is via a protected post front sight and a tangent rear sight with range graduations, and controls include the standard manual safety/selector lever.
Chambered in 5.56mm NATO, the rifle feeds from proprietary 5.56-specific steel Type 84 magazines; three 30-round magazines are included. Stated capacity is 30+1. Length of pull measures 12.5 inches, balancing compact storage with practical use.
