The AR-556 uses a direct impingement action with a carbine-length gas system and an F-height A2 front sight tower. The forged 7075-T6 aluminum receivers wear a Type III hard-coat anodized black finish and include a flat-top Picatinny rail, forward assist, dust cover, and case deflector. The receiver is marked "RUGER MAYODAN, NC USA."
Its 16-inch cold hammer-forged 4140 chrome-moly steel barrel features M4 feed ramps, a 1:8 twist to stabilize a wide range of bullet weights, and 1/2-28 muzzle threads capped by an A2 flash suppressor. This configuration is purpose-built for reliability and broad ammunition compatibility.
Factory furniture includes a carbine-length two-piece polymer handguard with delta ring, a 6-position M4-style telescoping stock with a staked castle nut, and a Ruger polymer pistol grip. Length of pull is 13.5 inches, offering adjustable fit across shooters and applications.
Sighting is handled by an A2-style fixed front sight post on the F-height gas block and a Ruger Rapid Deploy polymer flip-up rear aperture. The rifle is chambered in 5.56mm NATO with a 30+1 capacity and uses a manual safety selector. Made in the United States.
