The carbine uses a single-shot percussion break-action with a hinged breech and a top-strap latch. It is black powder only and uses a standard threaded percussion nipple; the flash channel is cleaned by removing the nipple (no separate clean-out screw).
The 21.62 in steel barrel transitions from octagon to round and is paired with iron sights: a fixed front blade and an adjustable rear leaf with an elevator. The rifling uses a 1:66 twist.
Furniture includes a walnut stock with a straight grip, a short carbine forend that covers only the rear portion of the barrel and ends well short of the muzzle, secured by a single barrel band, and a steel buttplate. A saddle ring bar with a large ring is fitted on the right side of the receiver. Length of pull is 14.5 in.
