The XD-S 4.0 is a striker-fired, single-stack .45 ACP built for a slim profile while retaining a 4" barrel for added sight radius. Capacity is 6+1, and the ambidextrous magazine release supports left- or right-handed use. Aggressive molded texturing on the grip aids control.
The two-tone configuration sets this pistol apart: a matte silver steel slide over a black polymer frame. The slide includes front and rear serrations, an external extractor, and a loaded-chamber indicator. The Springfield Armory crossed-cannon crest is stamped on top of the slide, with the slide stop and takedown lever located on the left side.
Sight picture is fast and clear thanks to a red fiber-optic front sight paired with a dovetailed, low-profile rear. The combination supports quick acquisition while keeping the top of the slide streamlined.
Safety features include a grip safety and an integral trigger safety. Markings include "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY U.S.A., MADE IN CROATIA," reflecting its Croatian manufacture. The serial number is marked on the barrel hood and on the frame identification plate.
Two factory steel magazines are included: one 6-round and one 5-round. The magazines are noted as having a mix of extended grip-sleeve and flush baseplates.
