The Compact MRD configuration features FN’s Low-Profile Optics-Mounting System with a removable cover plate, allowing direct mounting of compatible micro red dots while retaining elevated, all-black steel iron sights. The rear sight is integrated on the MRD cover plate, and the front is an elevated steel post, giving a clear sight picture with or without an optic installed.
Its compact dimensions center on a 3.7 in non-threaded barrel, an overall length of approximately 6.8 in, a width of 1.35 in, and a height of 4.8 in with the 12-round magazine or 5.2 in with the 15-round magazine. The pistol ships in FDE on both the slide and polymer frame for a consistent, low-glare finish.
Controls are fully ambidextrous, including the slide stop and magazine release, with front and rear slide serrations for confident manipulation. A three-slot MIL-STD-1913 rail on the dust cover supports compatible weapon-mounted lights or accessories.
The 509 Compact MRD is striker-fired with a short-recoil, semi-automatic action and a factory-specified trigger pull of 5.5–7.5 lb. It accepts higher-capacity FN 509 magazines, offering flexibility for concealed carry, range use, or duty backup roles.
